Arantzazu (Oñati, Gipuzkoa, Basque Country) is a sanctuary over 500 years old being cared for by Franciscan monks. It is located in the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park, at the heart of the Basque Country. A pre-eminent landmark of popular belief, Arantzazu is home to a considerable part of the basque soul, taking roots in her language and culture, love for nature, sobriety and individuality. Throughout history, it has adapted to social changes without losing its identity, setting itself up as a milestone of spirituality, culture, art, nature, ethics, dialogue and peace; a spring of humanism which is a world heritage, a place to find the shelter you are searching for (Whatch video). This is the result of the Franciscan friars’ work of five centuries. In 2008, efforts were united with Gipuzkoa’s Regional Council, Oñati’s City Council, the Mondragon Group and Kutxa to continually renovate this sanctuary and therefore the Arantzazu Gaur Foundation was created to promote it.
